Questions on Luisa’s Cause and her writings

 Q.  There is a rumor that Luisa's Cause has been suspended until all original writings of Luisa can be returned to the Vatican.  Is this true?

  A.  In an email received from Padre Bucci on October 30th, 2006, responding to this question, (Padre wrote), "For what it concerns the Cause of the Beatification of Luisa Piccarreta, there does not exist any suspension of which I am aware".   Padre Bucci,  is owner of the original Hours of the Passion, hand written by Luisa in 1914.   Other original works such as volumes 35 and 36 are in the possession of Fr. Gustavo, founder of the Sons of the Divine Will, a group of priests located in Saint Cloud, Florida.

Note:  In regard to how these original works came into the possession of Padre Bucci and Fr. Gustavo, Padre Bucci, when visiting the United States, indicated during one of his speaking engagements that the original volumes, 35 and 36, passed from Luisa Piccarreta after her death to his Aunt Rosaria Bucci.

The history of the volumes as reported by Padre Bucci is as follows:  On May 11, 1938 a priest representing the Holy Office arrived in Corato, and ordered Luisa to turn over the 34 volumes of her notebooks.  At that time Luisa had just completed volume 35 and had just started on volume 36.  Padre Bucci’s Aunt Rosaria, under direction of Luisa, gave this priest the 34 volumes he requested, but Aunt Rosario hid volume 35 under Luisa’s pillows.  Luisa wrote the last chapter of Volume 36 on December 28, 1938. As soon as the order for Luisa to write ceased.  Luisa from then on no longer wrote in her diary (the 36 volumes) even though she did write letters to friends.

Three months later on August 31, 1938, a Decree was published which condemned only three books of Luisa's that had been printed and published and these three edited works were put on the Index of prohibited books.  These three books were not Luisa’s original writings.    (These 3 books were Father Calvi's edited writings of Luisa's writings.) Padre Bucci emphasized that only these three edited versions of Luisa’s works were condemned.  Padre reaffirmed, "None of Luisa's original writings were ever condemned".

In Padre Bucci’s book “Childhood Memories” Padre states: “Indeed, after the condemnation of 1938, Aunt Rosaria came to our house wanting to burn all the objects that belonged to Luisa, but my brother, who was eighteen years old and on the point of leaving for military service, opposed this with all his might. And when he was told that those who disobey the Church go to hell, he answered: "I will go to hell, but her things will not be burned" and as a precaution, he put all the objects belonging to Luisa into a small box and took it away with him. (Padre Bucci was 3 years old at this time.)  Padre concluded, "Today they are in the care of my sister-in-law, Rita Tarantino, and her children, who guard them jealously."

When Padre Bucci’s Aunt Rosaria passed away in 1978, many of Luisa’s personal belongings, including these original writings of the Hours and the Volumes 35 and 36, were passed on to Padre Bucci.  When Fr. Gustavo was still in Corato, before he established his mission in the USA, Archbishop Carata asked Padre Bucci to loan the original volumes 35 and 36 to Fr. Gustavo.   Padre Bucci did this under the direction of the Archbishop of Trani.  As of the present date, these two original volumes remain in the hands of Fr. Gustavo, never having been returned to their original owner.

FAQ 2

Question:  Recently I was told that we are no longer allowed to read any of the volumes, unless a priest is present, in our cenacles. We may only read the Passion of Our Lord, and the Virgin Mary book, or Luisa's biography...is this the official instructions to all cenacles?

This question has been a great concern of many prayer groups who have been studying Luisa’s volumes for many years and do not have a Priest to oversee their meetings.

In all the letters issued from Trani, there is not any which prohibits the reading of the volumes by prayer groups.  However, there is one letter to EWTN which was written in 2003 requesting priests be appointed to guide the prayer groups.  The following is an excerpt from this letter (an English translation of the entire letter is posted below):

Excerpt from 2003 letter from Trani to EWTN  point No. 10.

“The Archbishop, therefore, blesses all prayer groups inspired by Luisa Piccarreta, but does not intend to assume responsibility for them, which is deferred to the ordinary authorities of each place for the verification of their authenticity and orthodoxy.  It would be desirable that these be guided by prudent priests, and of proven orthodoxy.”

The request for prayer groups to study “The Hours of the Passion”, “The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will” and biographies of Luisa’s life, was proposed by Padre Bucci.  This was to prepare beginners and the prayer groups to understand Luisa’s spirituality before starting to read any of the volumes.  Luisa is the model which needs to be followed by those who want to live the Spirituality of the Divine Will.  For example Luisa had a great devotions to the Eucharist, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Catholic Church.  Luisa received daily communion, prayed the rosary every day and was always humble and obedient to Church Authorities.

One of the goals of the Pious Universal Union for the Divine Will in the USA is to provide all prayer groups with access to such “prudent priests of proven orthodoxy” who can answer to any theological or spiritual questions concerning the writings of the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta.  These priests have a good understanding of the person and spirituality of Luisa and have the approval and support of their local bishops.

FAQ No. 3

Question:  We have heard that the Archdiocese of Trani is asking for financial help for the Beatification Cause of Luisa Piccarreta..  There are several groups in the USA asking for funds to be sent to them.  We prefer our donations go directly to Luisa's cause in Trani but are not sure how best to carry out our intent.  Can you please advise?

Answer:  The best way to make contributions directly to Trani would be to go to your bank and secure a "bank check"; not a personal check, not a money order, and not a cashiers check because only a "bank check" can be replaced if lost.  It is difficult for banks in Italy to process personal checks or money orders.  Bank checks could be made out directly to the addresses below.

To send donations for the Beatification Cause of Luisa Piccarreta to Trani through third parties, be sure to first secure a copy of an official letter from Trani to such groups giving them permission to raise funds for the Cause.  The letter of permission should be on the Diocese of Trani letterhead complete with signature.  You will want to be sure that your donation goes directly to the Cause and not to someone's private enterprise.

FAQ 4

Question:  In our cenacle group, we do not have access to a priest to lead us, but there are certain members who seem to be good at interpreting and explaining the writings of Luisa Piccarreta.  Our group wants to be incompliance with the guidelines set by the Archbishop of Trani. Therefore, is it  permissible for  lay persons to teach the Spirituality of the Divine Will?

This question brings up the importance of having the priests and not lay persons teach the spirituality of the Divine Will as given to Luisa Piccarreta.  It was noted in the previous issue of the "PADW in the USA" a letter from Trani to EWTN written in 2003.  That letter requested priests to be appointed to guide the prayer groups.  The following is an excerpt from 2003 letter from Trani to EWTN  point, No.

"The importance of priests teaching the spirituality of Luisa can be found in other letters published by Trani.  For example, the talk given by Archbishop Picherria on October 27, 2005 at the Corato Congress, he states the following:

As Pastor of this beloved Church I feel the responsibility…..

o        of showing them to the sister Dioceses, where there are present groups who are inspired by the Divine Volition, directing myself to the Brother Pastors—those who have the duty of overseeing so that one is not led astray—the thinking contained in the writings of Luisa, accepting the reliable studies of theologians who present them with a critical and correct preparation according to the sound doctrine of the Church;….”

In  Protocol No. 31/06VGG, Archbishop Piccheria has left the enforcement of guidelines to local bishops where Divine Will Prayer Groups are located and functioning.

“.. those who talk about Luisa Piccarreta must have the il nulla osta of the Bishop of the place where there are groups of the Divine Will or where one is invited to guide groups of spirituality.”

Therefore in answer to the above question. all lay persons should refrain from teaching  the spirituality of Luisa.  Leave the responsibility to the priests and avoid talks that are conducted by lay persons. The reason for this guideline can be found in the following excerpt taken from March 9, 2006 - Letter of Archbishop Picchieri of Trani which may allude to the January 22, 1998 letter issued by his predecessor Archbishop Carmelo Cassati to seven promoters of Luisa concerning an incident reported by William G. Bilton to Arthur & Joanne Kirby, April 04, 1997:

…“ All of you who have taken part in the meeting of October, certainly feel as one called and feel a duty shared with everyone in the Church, the spirituality lived by Luisa.

Nevertheless, the experiences of these years says to us that the doctrine of the Divine Will has not always been presented in a respectful and correct way, according to the Doctrine and the Magisterium of the Church, placing in the mouth of Luisa statements that one does not find even implicitly in her writings.  This causes trauma in consciences and even confusion and refusal in the people and among the Presbyteries and Bishops.

Other times they distort certain essential themes or points of this spirituality, presenting them outside of the context and the totality of the writings.  They make unauthorized deductions or conclusions; subjective thoughts are given as objective truth, or else they emphasis secondary aspects as if they were essential, in this way distorting the substance and diverting attention to less important things.  From this is the need of seeing possible deformations, inaccurate interpretations, imprudent or inappropriate teachings, in order to correct them and to present everything in full conformity with the Doctrine of the Church.”

Every four years, the Conference of Italian Bishops is held in Italy. There are delegations of lay persons from all over Italy who are included. At these conferences the Italian Bishops select two causes for Sainthood to imitate and follow. In October of this year, the conference will be held in Verona Italy, the previous conference was held four years earlier in Sicily. One of the two causes the Bishops have selected to imitate is the Servant of God, Luisa Piccarreta, the Little Daughter of the Divine Will. This may be the result of Padre Bucci sending copies of the biography of Luisa to all the Bishops in Italy.
